A Guide to Political Advocacy in Ireland

Decisions made in the Dáil, Seanad, and European Parliament directly impact issues about which you may have a personal or business interest. Communicating your interests and ideas with your representatives and sharing your personal story ensures that policymakers understand your position as well as the real-world implications of the legislation they are considering.

YourVoice.ie is designed to help you target your communications to the government officials who represent you and focus on the issues you care about.

1. Why Contact Your TDs (Teachtaí Dála)?

Your TDs are your primary link to Ireland’s national government. They are the only representatives who can vote on the final passing of laws in the Dáil.

  • Legislative Power: They debate and vote on the specific details of STL regulations.
  • Direct Access to Ministers: TDs can submit "Parliamentary Questions" (PQs) to the Minister overseeing a particular area of government (e.g., Minister for Housing or the Minister for Tourism), forcing a formal response on issues that matter to you.
  • Local Impact: They are highly sensitive to how national laws affect their specific constituency's economy and other local priorities.

2. Targeted Advocacy: Engaging with the Seanad

While the Dáil passes laws, the Seanad (Senate) provides a crucial "sober second thought." Senators are influential and focus on specific areas of concern because they hold influential spokesperson roles or sit on the committees currently reviewing the issue or issues you care about.

3. Why Contact Your MEPs (Members of the European Parliament)?

European law often sets the framework for Ireland’s national regulations, particularly regarding digital platforms and consumer rights.

  • EU Directives: Much of Ireland’s regulatory schemes stem from EU initiatives. Ireland’s MEPs influence those at the EU level.
  • Regulatory Balance: They work to ensure that Irish laws do not conflict with EU principles of the "Free Movement of Services."
